Biography

Lukasz Fabianski is a goalkeeper who plays for the Polish national side and Arsenal in the English Premier League. He is an intelligent and acrobatic goalkeeper who has learned a great deal since being handed the first-choice keeper spot at just 20 years old. He has represented Poland at both the World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008.

Childhood

Lukasz Fabianski was born on 18th April 1985 in Kostryzyn, Poland. Lukasz started off as an outfield player, but was converted to a goalkeeper when he was 9 years old, by a teacher who saw the potential in his goalkeeping ability. By the age of 14 he was attracting attention from the academies in his local area, and he played for a few of them as his teenage years progressed.

Early Career

Fabianski signed his first professional contract with Lech Poznan, where he learnt more about the finer points of goalkeeping technique. He was quickly snapped up by Legia Warsaw, who saw his hunger and ability and wanted a young goalie to keep future Celtic ‘keeper Artur Boruc on his toes.

Following Boruc’s departure in the Summer of 2005, Fabianski was handed the goalkeeping gloves and told he was first-choice – a remarkable feat for Lukasz who was just 20 years old at the time. The trust in Lukasz was repaid by the young Pole, with Lukasz pulling off some amazing saves as Legia Warsaw stormed to the league title. Fabianski was voted the league’s Best Goalkeeper for two seasons running, and by then was being carefully watched by some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Current Club

On May 8th 2007, Fabianski was flown into London Heathrow airport, and underwent a medical examination for Arsenal Football Club, signing for the Gunners 3 days later. He was initially the third-choice goalkeeper, behind Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia, although he was allowed to play in the ‘Carling Cup Kids’ teams to get some experience of playing at the Emirates stadium.

With Jens Lehmann leaving, Fabianski has stepped up to be substitute goalie, though it is surely only a matter of time before he is given his chance to prove himself at the highest level.

International

Fabianski has been included in the Poland squad ever since his first call up to the national side in March 2006. He faces competition for the top spot from Artur Boruc and Tomasz Kuszczak, but has made himself an invaluable squad member – helping boost morale and being on hand at both the World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008.
