Biography
Jack Cork is a defender for Chelsea in the English Premier League, on loan at Burnley. He can play anywhere across the back-line, but is at his best when playing in the centre of defence, where he can use his fantastic positional sense and tackling ability to halt opposition attacks.
Childhood
Cork was born on 25th June 1989 in Carshalton, South London. Football ability obviously runs in the family, with dad Alan Cork making over 500 appearances at the highest level (most notably for the ‘Crazy Gang’ of Wimbledon). Cork has been a member of the Chelsea academy since he was 9 years old, and the fact that he has captained most of the youth teams shows how much respect he has gained, from both his team-mates and the Chelsea coaches.
Early Career
Cork made his debut for Chelsea in the pre-season tour of America, playing as the team’s left-back, and performing admirably for one so young – he was just 18 years old. Despite being a genuine talent, Cork has yet to make his competitive debut for the Blues, with experienced defenders such as John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Alex ahead of him in the first-team pecking order.
Current Club
To gain first team experience, Cork was sent out on loan. He learnt the trade at Bournemouth, whilst his loan spell at Scunthorpe may not have gone successfully in terms of point (they were relegated) but he was noted by the fans as their best performer, winning the Player of the Year Award.
Subsequent loan spells at Southampton and Watford have given him a taste for first-team football, and proved that he has the maturity, physique and ability to play the highest level.
International
Jack Cork has been called up to England’s U-21 sides throughout the 2008/09 season, with his performances for Southampton and Watford showing coach Stuart Pearce that he was good enough to step up. He has played at all levels for England youth, and is being tipped to go to the very top of the game.
