Biography

Emiliano Insua is a defender for Argentina and Liverpool in the English Premier League. He can play as the left-sided centre-back or as the left-back, and has had a run in the Liverpool first team following injuries to Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena. Lacking the physical height and build to battle with the likes of Didier Drogba, Insua uses his good bal-reading and pace to get himself out of trouble on the few occasions he needs to.

Childhood

Insua was born on 7th January 1989, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He played as a left-sided midfielder in his earlier days, when his technical ability and fact that he was more comfortable on the ball than most led to him being used at the heart of his youth team’s play. When he was 14 years old he made the transition to Boca Junior’s youth teams.

Early Career

Emiliano Insua had yet to make a first team appearance for Boca Juniors when he started to get noticed by scouts from Europe. Some fantastic games for the Argentina U-17s ensured that clubs were desperate to sign him up, and Boca were keen to profit from this young talent.

Current Club

Liverpool were the first to offer Boca Juniors a fair price for Emiliano Insua. To help get round work-permit regulations, Emiliano arrived at Anfield at first on loan, in November 2006. Aged just 18, Insua impressed enough in the reserves to earn his debut in the Liverpool red in April 2007.

After winning the U-20 World Cup with Argentina in the summer of 2007, Insua’s move from Boca was made permanent. Emiliano was still very much a fringe player of the team but he was allocated his favourite number 22 shirt, and performed admirably.

Whilst fighting with experienced professionals Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena for the first-choice left-back spot has been difficult, Insua has impressed in the few games he has played, leading many on the Kop to believe that they already have their future left-back at the club.

International

Emiliano Insua has represented Argentina at various youth levels, with most success coming in the U-20 World Cup in 2007, which saw Emiliano returning home to Liverpool with a winner’s medal. Insua played in all 7 matches, and was an integral part of the team, who conceded just 4 goals throughout the whole tournament. He will be hoping to repeat this success at the 2009 World Cup, and win a call-up to the Argentina first-team.
